Sensational Resources
Back Print Page Email Page

Welcome to our Sensory Resources page!

As you all know, I give my full support to products and resources geared towards sensory sensitive children and children with SPD and their families.

We have created several pages devoted to all families with special needs. On here you will find products such as books, videos, DVDs and CDS as well as products specifically geared to SID/SPD, Asperger's and Autism/Autistic children and families. So please if you don't see something you believe should be, email me and I'll be sure to add it, if appropriate. This includes links to websites and community resources.

We'll also feature a book, product and website of the month. Our goal is to do resource reviews to help those making excellent products to help our children as well as to get those products out there to families who need them. Do you have a product/book/activity or website you'd like featured here? Email us through the site with all the details and maybe we'll put it up.

Thank you for your support.

FEATURED BOOK: Music Therapy, Sensory Integration, and the Autistic Child by Dorita S. Berger

This is a fantastic reference book for anyone interested in trying music therapy in conjunction with a child's SPD therapy. It presents a complete picture of this form of therapy including chapters explaining Aspects of Autism and Sensory Integration, explanations of the SEVEN sensory systems and how music 'teaches' the brain as well as the difference between 'Hearing' and 'Listening'.

This book is excellent because not only does it teach caregivers about music therapy but it also discusses sensory integration, Autism, brain structures and functions in clear, simple, easy-to-understand language so even the layman can understand. We have had the opportunity to chat with the author and will be posting the interview on 'The Gift' blog in the near future! Thank you for this incredible book, Dorita. We so needed it.

FEATURED WEB RESOURCE: OJTA (Our Journey Thru Autism

A few months ago, I came across one of the most phenomenal blogs that I think every family on their own journey with SPD, ASD, Asperger’s or other developmental struggles should be on. It was a space created by the Warrior Mama, Tiffani Lawton. There are people who crumble under the stress of having a child with high needs and some who reach out. There are still others who refuse to sit back, wanting to get out there and make a difference through raising understanding, awareness, and information. Tiffani Lawton is the latter.

I am so pleased to feature Tiffani and the work she’s doing through her amazing blog, “Our Journey Thru Autism” on our "Parent's Eyes" page over at "The Gift" blog. I am greatly inspired by Tiffani and all her tireless efforts to raise awareness for families around the world living with ASD and Autism.

Thank you, Tiffani, for your incredible contributions to the ASD/SPD communities. You and your work are the focus of this summer's "Featured Web Resources."

FEATURED COMMUNITY RESOURCE:

SPD Parent Zone Organization is an amazing community resource created by two moms in February 2010 who completely understand what it's like to be a 'sensational' mom. In their own words they are, "...two mothers that have helped each other through the great successes and failures in raising our children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).  We each have three children, two of whom have SPD.  We have experienced raising our children together, initally believing that something was potentially wrong with them.  After learning that they have SPD, we are now working to make our lives and our families more manageable by understanding our children's needs."

Kelly and Dawn are two of the most passionate and compassionate ladies I've met and are so devoted to helping raise awareness for SPD through information and sharing. In addition to their community non-profit organization, they also have a phenomenal Website chocked full of books suggestions, links to helpful websites, connections to therapists, special education teachers, and to other parents that have children with SPD.  As they say, "We wanted to save you from the long nights searching for answers, so we created this one-stop-shop for parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in learning more about SPD." This is a MUST HAVE for your online resources. Thank you to Kelly and Dawn for creating such an incredible resource. We focus on your amazing efforts this summer. =)

FEATURED MAGAZINE/RESOURCE:  Parenting Special Needs is a bi-monthly Zine packed full with useful information from experts, professionals and parents on the front lines of parenting special needs children. It's different from Unique magazine in that at Unique, we focus strictly on the parents. With Parenting Special Needs, all topics related to raising special needs children is open for discussion. An extremely valuable resource worth looking into.
