Links and Resources About Anxiety and other Emotional Disorders
Back Print Page Email Page

I was unsure, at first, of whether to include products about anxiety, worry, OCD and other such disorders...until Jaimie was diagnosed with them. Jaimie developed such disorders as a result of the extreme way she's affected by her sensory stimulation. She worries so much about how things may bother her, it truly interferes with her ability to enjoy simple activities children should just have fun with.

Therefore, I've included a few resources on how to help children learn to recognize, acknowledge and cope with their emotions and feelings so they don't turn into something more serious. The following are in my own library, and we've used them, so I can tell you they're pretty good.

If you have anything to add, please email me. It's important to offer as many choices as possible.

Books:

When My Worries Get Too Big! (Kari Dunn Buron) This book is fantastic. Not only are the words suited to young people but the pictures are too. The best part is the child can draw pictures in the book of what they feel like when their feelings get "too big", how they deal with them and what they can do to calm themselves down. I love the interaction part...it helps to empower children to take an active role in helping themselves. Awesome resource.

My Book Full of Feelings (Amy V. Jaffe, M.S.W., and Luci Gardner) This is similar in that the book teaches children how to control and react to things but it gives the child a way to rate their feelings. And it categorizes feelings into "Sad," "Angry," "Calm," "Frustrated," "Happy," and "Worried." The child gets to put what situations make them feel that way, the difference between a small and BIG feeling and how to counteract the BIG ones. Jaimie loves this book!
